How to calculate Destocking on Commonage

Step 1     If stock reductions specified in Framework Plan is 10% or less, then planner discretion is allowed when determining level of destocking required.

Step 2     On mixed cattle and sheep farms, if farmer agrees that cattle at no time will be on the commonage, the destocking of sheep will be based on PPP if applicable (> 5.0 ewe eq/ha) and the percentage destocking for the commonage. It must be assured that all the ewes are on the commonage in this case and the non – commonage area is not overstocked with cattle.

For other situations the formula below (ie steps 3-7) will apply to determine destocking.

Step 3

Establish ewe equivalent as follows:                                                           Ewe Equivalents

- Ewe Premium paid in 2001                                                                                  150

- Cattle Livestock Units in 2001, 20 X 6.7 (based on CMMS Records)                 134

- Other Grazing Livestock, Livestock Units X 6.7                                                      0

                                                                                         TOTAL                       284 (A)

Step 4

Establish Forage Area Farmed in 2001

                                                                                                                              Area (ha)

- 10 ha of non-commonage excluding designated hill type lands                                      10

- 5 ha of designated non commonage hill type land                                                           5

- 35 ha owned commonage of which

-          13 ha in Commonage 1                                                                                 13

-          12 ha in Commonage 2                                                                                 12

-          10 ha in Commonage 3                                                                                 10

-          5 ha rented/leased commonage                                                                       0

(not counted unless declared for Area Aid in yrs 1998 to 2002)

                                                                                                 TOTAL                       50 (B)

Step 5

Stocking density   Ewe equivalents per ha

A from Step 1   =   284   =   5.68 (C)

B from Step 2          50

The PPP may apply if (C) is greater than 5.0 and destocking percentage is 20% or greater

Step 6

Stock Reductions specified in Commonage 1                                                                        40%

Stock Reductions specified in Commonage 2                                                                        15%

Stock Reductions specified in Commonage 3                                                                          5%

Stock Reductions Prescribed for designated non commonage hill type land                            30%

Step 7

Calculate Reductions in Ewes as follows:

- Reductions for excess over 5.0 S.R or PPP, Commonage1       13 X 0.68 =                8.84

Further reductions due to prescription in Commonage 1  13 X 5.0 X 40% =                  26.0

Further reductions due to prescription in Commonage 2  12 X 5.68 X 15% =               10.22

Further reductions due to prescription in Commonage 3  10 X 5.68 X 0% =                       0

Reduction on 5 ha non-commonage hill type target area    5 X 5.68 X 30% =                 8.52

Total Reduction in Ewes required   54

                                                                                 Total Quota Ewes Allowed            96
